Are You Able to Solve It? The Forgotten Dutch Creation That Forged the Modern World

There are many candidates for the title of “world’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.

According to a recent publication, however, that title belongs to the automated timber mill conceived by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.

“Before mechanised cutting, building a modest merchant vessel required around 10 lumberjacks laboring for three months,” notes the author. “With wind-powered sawmills, the same amount of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”

Thanks to their rapid automated cutter, that converted timber to planks with virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders could build ships faster compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands naval, economic and cultural dominance in the continent and the globe.

The Original True Industrial Device

The inventor's lumber mill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a wheel. One component converted its circular motion into vertical motion to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism transformed that same rotary motion into a lateral movement feeding the log to the blade. A geared mechanism moved the log ahead a measured step each stroke.

“Each element seemed modest by itself. The Dutchman’s genius was to integrate these parts so the machine operated within a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting on every descending stroke and advancing with each return stroke. It was a remarkably clever application of fundamental components.”
